The Sello-Moremian War, known in Moremia as the Moremian War of Independence, was a conflict between the First Selathine Republic and the Moremian Confederation declared in the aftermath of Sedorague Hufarii’s assassination by a Moremian nationalist. Lasting from 1774 to 1775, it led to the unification of Moremia as an independent kingdom.
In the aftermath of the Second Cyarik War in 1770, the Moremian sheylichs of Kandia, Ezono, Zhukatia, and Khunice became de facto independent of the crumbling Fashi Reech. Morev, the ancient capital of the Artian Empire and a major holy city in Zascaism, fell into the hands of Selath. Zascaic partisans opposed to Selathine occupation rose up in the outskirts and aligned themselves with the growing Moremian nationalist movement. Selathine dictator Sedorague Hufarii deliberately ordered the taking of Morev, resulting in clashes in the city.
Following Sedorague’s assassination, the Selathine Consulate led by Benedyri Asiguan blamed the killing on Moremian nationalism and used it to justify the formal annexation of occupied Morev, along with emergency measures against Zascaic partisans and Moremian institutions. This provoked the Shey of Kandia, Pridichi Montanyo, into declaring war on Selath alongside all the members of the Moremian Confederation which possibly induced orduband states and militias to join.
The Selathines began the war with the upper hand, capturing all of Morev in the first weeks of the war. However, despite being disunited, the Moremian armies were more organized while Selathine troops were in chaos following the assassination of Sedorague. Led by the former orduband General Abe Haovan, a series of guerilla victories in the Edipar mountains alongside victories in Deirdun led by Ezhano Valcrezi culminated in the capture of Pashed, effectively ending the war after seven months in 1775.
During the string of victories from late 1774 onward, to rally the Moremian states together, they proclaimed their union as the Kingdom of Moremia under the Kandian shey Pridichi I and Crown Chancellor Anesti ga’Lafaleza, both of whom in addition to Valcrezi and Haovan became founding fathers of a nation-state unifying all of Moremia for the first time since the Artian Empire. Furthermore, much of the Deirdun territory was annexed by Moremia following the Treaty of Khunice that ended the war in 1775.
